Tampa General Hospital has received international recognition as a Baby-Friendly® designated birth facility. A large obstetrical delivery service with more than 5900 deliveries each year affords the hospital many newborns for the newborn and special care nurseries. It features a nine-bed pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) which serves as a Level I trauma unit as well as burn unit, an 82 bed state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with 52,000 square feet of space, 50 inpatient floor beds including general and subspecialty patients, and one of just three outpatient pediatric dialysis units in the state. The Children's Medical Center has a total of 181 pediatric beds and provides a comprehensive range of medical, surgical and rehabilitative services for infants, children and adolescents. TGH is one of just three pediatric brain and spinal cord injury rehabilitation centers in the state and, as the region's leading safety net hospital, is committed to providing excellent and compassionate health care ranging from the simplest to the most complex medical services. The hospital is home to one of the leading organ transplant centers in the country the pediatric kidney transplantation program is the busiest in west central Florida. TGH is the area's only level I trauma center and one of just four burn centers in Florida. USF medical students, Physician Assistant students, nursing and physical therapy students also receive part of their training there. TGH has been affiliated with the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine since the school was created and is the primary teaching affiliate of the Morsani College of Medicine over 300 residents train at Tampa General Hospital.
